Yes, we know that during the high season, parking becomes a major deal, however it is safe to say that parking your rented vehicle in Syros is much easier than on islands like Mykonos or Paros. Here are our recommendations, whether you bring your own car or you choose to rent a vehicle from Maistrali Car Rental at the port, Finikas, the airport, or opt for it to be brought to you wherever is most convenient.
Best places to park in Syros
Most visitors leave the car slightly outside the historic center and walk into town. The most commonly recommended lots are:
- Nisaki Port Parking (paid, closest to the center)
- Sklavenitis Parking (free)
- Karnagio Parking (free)
- Doxa Parking (free)
- Lalakia Parking (free)
The municipality lists these as the main public parking areas around Hermoupolis.
Tips
- Use the big free lots like Sklavenitis or Karnagio
- Walk 10–20 minutes into town
- Avoid trying to park directly around Miaouli Square at any time
- The port-side Nisaki lot is the most convenient paid option and especially useful for luggage or ferry arrivals.
Important things to know
- Streets in Ermoupoli and Ano Syros are narrow
- Parallel parking is common
- Some uphill streets become one-lane at night
- Ano Syros itself is basically pedestrian-only once you get inside the medieval alleys
From late June through August:
- parking near the port fills quickly after sunset
- weekends are busier because a lot of visitors come over
- arriving before 18:00 makes life dramatically easier
- during peak season, it’s worth using the designated parking areas to avoid any unpleasant surprises
Tiny local trick
A lot of locals park once and stop using the car at night. Hermoupolis is super walkable after that — especially around:
- Vaporia
- Miaouli Square
- the harbor promenade
- Ano Syros stairs
