Syros airport to Hermoupolis: How to get to your destination

Flying into Syros? One of the advantages of arriving by plane is how close the airport is to Hermoupolis. You can reach the island’s capital in just a few minutes, while the coastal villages are also within a relatively short drive.

Depending on where you’re staying and how you plan to spend your time on the island, you can take a taxi, rent a car or use local buses once you’ve reached Hermoupolis.

Here’s what to expect when you land.

How far is Syros airport from Hermoupolis?

Syros Island National Airport (JSY), officially named Dimitrios Vikelas Airport, is located approximately 2km from Hermoupolis.

The drive to the town centre usually takes around 5–10 minutes, depending on your exact destination. The port, Miaouli Square and most accommodation in central Hermoupolis are all nearby.

Taking a taxi from Syros airport

A taxi is probably the most straightforward choice if you’re staying in Hermoupolis, especially if you’re traveling with luggage. The journey into town is short, and the fare depends on your destination and any applicable charges.

Taxis serve the airport, although you shouldn’t assume that one will always be waiting outside when your flight arrives. Arranging a pickup in advance is a good idea, particularly during the busy summer months.

If you’re staying at a hotel or guesthouse, you can also ask your host to help arrange a transfer.

Can you take a bus from Syros airport?

There is no regular public bus connection directly from Syros Airport to Hermoupolis. The island’s KTEL buses operate from Hermoupolis, connecting the town with villages and beaches such as Galissas, Finikas, Kini, Poseidonia and Vari.

If you want to use the bus network, you’ll first need to reach the town centre. The main bus station is near the port, where you can continue towards other parts of Syros.

Bus services are more frequent during the summer, with fewer departures outside the main tourist season. You can check the KTEL Syros timetables before your trip.

Renting a car at Syros airport

Renting a car at the airport is another option, particularly if you’re staying outside Hermoupolis or planning to explore different parts of the island.

Maistrali Car Rental has a desk inside the airport, with staff available around scheduled flight arrivals. Visitors can collect a pre-booked vehicle or arrange a rental on arrival, depending on availability.

If you’ve reserved a car in advance, online check-in is available to help reduce the time spent on paperwork at the desk.

For visitors arriving during July or August, booking ahead is advisable, as the choice of available vehicles may be more limited.

Getting from the airport to other parts of Syros

Hermoupolis isn’t the only place to stay on the island. Many visitors head directly to one of the coastal villages, each offering a slightly different atmosphere.

Azolimnos and Vari are among the closest destinations to the airport. Both are on the southeastern side of Syros, making the journey relatively short.

Further away, Galissas, Finikas and Poseidonia are popular choices along the western and southern coasts. Kini, on the western side of the island, is another option, particularly for visitors who prefer a quieter seaside setting.

All these areas are easily reached by road. A taxi can be convenient for a direct transfer, while a rental car gives you more flexibility if you plan to travel around the island during your stay.

If you’re staying in central Hermoupolis, you may not need a car every day. Much of the town can be explored on foot, although its steep streets and steps are worth keeping in mind when choosing accommodation.

A few things to know before you arrive

A little planning can make your arrival easier, especially if you’re visiting Syros for the first time.

  • Check your accommodation’s exact location. A property described as being in Hermoupolis may be some distance uphill from the port or town centre.
  • Arrange your airport transfer if needed. This is especially useful if you’re arriving with children, several suitcases or during a busy travel period.
  • Check bus times if you’re staying outside town. Routes and frequency vary by season, and connections may not line up with your flight.
  • Have your driving licence ready if you’re renting a vehicle. Completing any available check-in steps beforehand can also save time.

Syros is a relatively compact island, so reaching your accommodation after landing is usually simple. Knowing your options in advance is enough to make the arrival straightforward, whether you’re spending your stay in Hermoupolis or heading to one of the villages.
